Our intuition – that gut feeling – is a really useful thing to have, and something we should always listen to. It’s like a little fortune teller that for some reason knows something bad could happen soon. However, there are other situations where we should also listen to our intuition. Find out what they are – and how you can strengthen it, so that you’re always able to trust your inner gut feeling.
Our intuition helps us survive
When life was still far more dangerous than it is now, we had to be able to trust our intuition with our life. Like animals we are able to scent upcoming dangers and therefore protect ourselves in advance – by running away for example. A few hundred or thousand years ago this instinct would save our lives. Nowadays, where not many dangers are around anymore we lost the ability to totally trust it. We actually weaken our intuition by not listening to it.
It is a trait of a woman in her divine feminine energy – I’ll write something about this topic another time – to have a strong intuition. As mothers we need this natural ability to look after and protect our child. This is a real advantage, as you’ll see, because a strong intuition can be a superpower.
Our intuition guides us through life
Basically, your intuition is a “tool” that can give you a feeling or a presumption about an upcoming situation. Sometimes, we just don’t really feel comfortable with the thought of making a certain decision or going somewhere specific we planned to go. But your intuition can also guide you towards things that are good for you and your destiny wants you to pursue but you wouldn’t normally be drawn towards. It’s your intuition that tells you whether or not you’ll like a person before you even know them – in combination with the energy they give off, of course.
Actually, your intuition knows whether something’s good or not before you do. And it would be good if you listened to that feeling more often 😉
In this text, I talked about the Three Selves that form us. One of them, the base Self, is our inner child who acts based on feelings and emotions. Dan Millman called that part your intuition, the part of you that wants to be loved by you and guides you with love towards safety.
How to strengthen your intuition
Whenever you’re not sure about something you can ask your spirit guides for direction, for example by asking them to show you a sign. On top of that, ask yourself – this inner part of you that is connected to the spirit world and the universe the strongest – what you should do. The key here is to ask yourself a question – in your head or out loud – and wait for the answer. But: the answer comes immediately – it’s a natural law. Don’t doubt the answer, don’t question and don’t overthink it. It’s the right answer. It works best when you give yourself two options to choose from. For example: Should I quit and look for a new job that excites me or should I stay in my old job that bores me? As I said, an answer should come up immediately. If it doesn’t, it means your intuition is still pretty weak.
In this case, practice with more simple things.
- Should I eat bread or cereal for breakfast this morning?
- Should I wash my hair today or tomorrow?
- Should I wear the black or the blue jacket?
- Do I need a scarf or not?
- Should I go out and drink tonight or should I stay in?
You’ll soon see that the answers will come more easily to you. This next aspect is important: Never do the opposite of what your intuition tells you. With the breakfast options it doesn’t really matter. But when your intuition tells you not to go somewhere because there might be danger, you listen to it! You have this feeling for a reason. And these are four situations where listening to your intuition will be the most useful.
Feeling drawn to a person
Sometimes, we get to know someone and we immediately ‘click’. I’m sure you have experienced this before. We just like some people more than others, before we even get to know them. I have said before that our auras, energy and the frequencies we vibrate on play a huge role there too. But when we really get along with someone usually means this person will be good for us – even if it’s just for a certain amount of time. It also doesn’t have to mean that you’re supposed to be together with that person. Sometimes, having good conversations and finding a friend in someone is a good enough reason to pursue interactions with them. I suggest you listen to your heart – and your gut of course. It’ll tell you, whether a person is right for you, whether you should be friends or lovers or just friendly acquaintances.
Having a feeling that you’re not well
Have you heard of those stories where people suspected something being wrong in their body, got it checked and actually found something (like a disease, a virus, a tumor, etc.)? Such things can happen. It doesn’t have to be this extreme though. It also applies to listening to your body and figuring out what to eat, how much to sleep, to go outside or to stay in, to drink alcohol or tea or exposing yourself to a stressful situation or not. Your intuition can tell you what you need, especially when your body is in a more fragile state. Your gut feeling oftentimes tells you whether you should take a certain pill or medicine or if curing something naturally is better. Oftentimes women take pregnancy tests because they ‘have a feeling’. And usually that feeling is right… Again, try to strengthen your intuition and learn to listen to your body, your mind, your heart and your souls. And you’ll be much more in tune in how you live your life.
The feeling of danger
As I mentioned above, relying on your intuition in a situation of potential danger is crucial to your wellbeing and sometimes even to your survival – that’s how we survived thousands of years. My mom told be that when she was young she never did anything that didn’t feel right. Sometimes, she was out with some friends and when they wanted to go somewhere, let’s say a bar, and she got an uneasy gut feeling, she went home. Despite of what her friends would think or say. That’s the way you honor your gut feeling; never go against it or ignore it. A feeling of danger can occur when walking somewhere, like a dark neighborhood you don’t know, when getting into a car, plane, boat, etc., when going with a person you don’t know, when visiting someone’s house, when being in nature, like a forest or a sea with strong currents, and so on. You know what I mean …
The feeling of excitement for a new chance
As I said, your gut feeling wants to remove you from potentially dangerous situations but it also wants to push you towards situations that are good for you and will provide you with advantages or experiences. I have learned this recently. I had the chance of doing a semester abroad – in Madrid to be specific. At first I got excited, so I applied. But when it came to registering, taking a language test, renting out my room, finding a new place to stay etc., I got so stressed an anxious. I overthought it so hard that I was really close to quitting and not even trying to go anymore. But I knew it would be an amazing experience and a chance that wouldn’t come up again for quite some time. If destiny didn’t want me to go to Madrid, it wouldn’t have brought up the opportunity for me and sparked that fired up that first spark of excitement. Here, I asked myself the question I suggested above: Should I go to Madrid, or should I just stay home? And of course, my gut told me to go. So now, I have registered, and I’m really excited about going to Spain 🙂
My final thoughts
Having a strong intuition is a gift and a strong advantage in life. It will guide you and help you make decision that are in your best interest. It will keep you save in some situations and push you towards new exciting opportunities in other situations. Work on improving and strengthening you gut feeling. Ask yourself questions and trust that your intuition provides the best answer for you. When you adapt the habit of listening to it, it will get stronger and stronger over time. However, ignoring your intuition or worse, knowing what your gut says and going against it, will weaken it. So, practice, and let yourself be guided!
