When people speak about spirituality, meditation is always one of the first things mentioned. But why is that? What value can meditation really bring? In as short as possible I’ll explain why meditation is considered so valuable among people who practice spirituality.
Meditation keeps you in the moment
People usually have their minds on two things: The past and the future. Thinking a lot about the past can bring us a lot of regret and can make us depressed. Whereas the future always keeps us moving and makes us anxious. The thing about meditation is that it allows – and actually requires – you to forget these two for a few minutes and focus on just the moment you’re in. And that is important because this moment right this second is all of life you’ll ever have.
Philosophically speaking, the past and the future don’t exist. The first one is just a memory and the latter one is an anticipation. The present is where life is happening. And so in order to not rush through this life it’s super important to learn to linger in the moment you’re currently in. And meditation is the easiest way to do that, which is why it is so appreciated by people who try to practice spirituality.
It’s not about sitting still and not thinking
And this is where it’s important to mention that meditation is not just sitting on your bed, your legs crossed, arms resting on your knees, eyes closed and the mind completely empty. That’s one way to do it, but it’s not easy. Other ways to meditate are to do something you really love, where you’re so in your element that time just flies. When you’re doing something you love, where you’re not worried about anything but you’re just focused on your task. This could be painting, playing the piano, dancing, cooking, sex, or also spending time with someone you really care about 🙂 You know, when time just passes by in a second. That’s always a sign that you were so focused on the moment, you couldn’t even worry about the past or the future. That’s where you want to spend more of your time!
Meditation strengthens the intuition
Meditation in the more traditional sense requires you to connect with your body and your mind. Once you’re able to listen to your body, your thoughts, your emotions, once you get to know your inner voice, you’ll feel more connected to your intuition, which is always a good thing, as it will lead you through life.
It calms your nervous system
Especially the part of the controlled breathing is responsible for the calming of your nervous system. Meditation is the best thing you can do in moments of stress. When you’re so tired and exhausted, but have no possibility to sleep, meditate. It’s what will calm you down and relax you the most, especially if you do it regularly.
For me, being able to be so relaxed and secure and balanced is an ideal state to be in. Which is primarily achieved through meditation. Of course, it takes a lot of effort to get to know yourself in a way that you’ll be able to self-regulate. You’ll need to learn your triggers, your wounds, your beliefs, your emotions, etc. I think therapy can get you far in life. But if we look at it from an objective point of view, what will calm you down, relax you, center you and keep you in the moment, while connecting you to who you are inside, is meditation.
And so, it’s always advisable to practice it more. I have written before in detail about what the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual benefits there are to meditation. You’ll find it here, if you want to keep reading.
Thank you and see you soon.
