Especially during dark times, the belief in God’ guidance can pull us out of misery. Photo: Pexels
Oftentimes before, I have heard people question the existence and the legitimacy of a higher power, often called God. I have always been careful with the word God, as I don’t think everybody understands the same thing with this term. Nor do I believe that there is one right belief or definition. To discuss why a higher power allows suffering, first we must discuss what that higher Power is.
What God – that higher power – is and isn’t
Personally, God is an energy so powerful it is able to create. The entire universe, with its planets and nature that reigns on them, to me is what God is. It is the destiny that pulls the strings to our lives and guides us through beauty and hardship.
God is simply a higher power, one that is beyond our ability and comprehension, and one that’s not supposed to be understood by humans, only experienced. I am convinced that it is right for us to believe in it and to follow it, surrender and let it guides us through these lifetimes.
However, I think it’s bullshit that would have to pay money to be let into heaven or that we will only be accepted if we do certain things or don’t do others (so sin, essentially). I don’t believe in sin. And this is where I finally try to answer this big question.
Why does God allow suffering?
If there were a God, someone who is portrayed so good, and all-loving, why would that God allow so much suffering to happen? Why is there so much hardship if we are supposedly led by this higher power? Couldn’t God just eradicate all bad and we would all just live in so much more harmony?
The simple answer is that if we didn’t have the power to choose our own actions, there would be no reason for us to come to this world and live. Life is a simple yet astonishingly difficult task that we have. We come to this earth to make experiences primarily. Whether they are good or bad.
The value of hardship
On the one hand, we need difficult situations and suffering to grow as a person and a soul. There would be absolutely no self-growth if we didn’t face discomfort or pain once in a while. We don’t come here to enjoy ourselves, that’s what we do at home, on the Other Side.
We come here to learn and live, make experiences and grow, face new situations and overcome old ones. If there wouldn’t be anything that gives life ups and downs, we could not take advantage of this earthly experience. Some more than others of course.
The power of choice
The second big reasons is that we are dedicated to level up as a soul. And we do that partly through human experiences. The soul is inherently and intrinsically good, it is made from that same God-like source that exists in the whole universe and in perfect and beautiful nature.
The one thing that can be torn towards darkness is the human body. Us as humans are the ones that commit the crimes and misbehave. This happens especially when one lives so out of tune with their own soul, that they don’t even know what they are: A divine being looking for humanly experiences.
God is not a fix-it-all
We need to be able to make our own choices in order to grow from bad to good. If we were told by a higher Power, by God, what would and wouldn’t be allowed to do, God would take all power of growth and learning away from us. Doing good is only a good deed if you had the choice and the chance to do bad as well.
A life without difficulty would not only be unrealistic – since we are all at different levels of spiritual development – it would also be useless and without value.
Two reasons summarized
To summarize: We I. need to have good and bad experiences to learn all kinds of lessons. Only ease would get us nowhere spiritually. And we II. need to be allowed to make our own choices – whether they are good or bad – to be able to grow and evolve from good to bad. We all come here to learn. And this learning process would be useless if we didn’t have no power of choice.
That is simply put why God doesn’t interfere with what we are doing. God only guides us and helps us take our anxiety away of what might happen in the future. Because we know that soon, we will all go home and will have immensely profited off of this experienced and evolved a lot spiritually. And that’s all that counts!
