The best books about spirituality every spiritual person has read

Nowhere can we learn as much as through reading. Especially in a field like spirituality. Photo: Pexels

After having included the fundamental books about spirituality in this text like; The Alchimist, Journey of Souls, Becoming Supernatural, the Dalai Lama’s cat and some others, I want to share ten more books here I have read in the meantime whom I consider to be so profound, every person who considers themselves being spiritual has to have read.

1. The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle

This is the book I read most recently and let me tell you; it seems hard to understand, but once you get behind what Eckhart Tolle is trying to explain, the realizations you get from this book are insanely life changing. He writes about how we could live a life free of all stress, all worry, all unhappiness and all pain, if we were only able to learn to live in the present moment.

The power of the Now carries fundamental meaning to us, that our Higher Self recognizes, but that we as humans learned to suppress by living a life that is out of tune with our true nature. The concept of time alone can mess things up for us pretty badly and we need to learn how to let past and future go. The present moment is the only thing that exists and if we learn to accept this and live by this, we will reach enlightenment.

2. The Monk who Sold his Ferrari, Robin Sharma

This story by Robin Sharma is about a high-performing, rich, successful lawyer who, through a life-threatening incident decides to go live abroad with monks and turn over his life. He returns home and visits and old friend of his, who is also stuck in the corporate life and teaches him all about the life of spirituality, and how it will change your life living in tune with your true nature.

This book is about how to achieve a fit body, a clear mind, true purpose, achievements through energy and mental work and not through physical possessions. This book is considered a classic among the spiritual literature.

3. 101 Essays that will change the way you think, Brianna Wiest

This book isn’t necessarily focused on spirituality. However, it talks about so many daily instances and looks at life from a philosophical perspective. This book too carries many eye-opening and meaningful little essays that can truly change your outlook on life.

I like it so much, I believe I have read it twice already, and will definitely read it a third time.

4. Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill

Even though this book’s primary objective is to teach a good money-mindset, it so based on manifestation practices that one can easily consider it a spiritual book. It even is a book the monk in the story I mentioned above considered to be so valuable, he recommended it to his friend, as an effort to change your life from a limited one to a spiritual, unlimited one.

It’s about how we can create wealth through the power of our minds, through hard work, through trust and creativity. Also, Napoleon Hill understood many many years ago how we can attract things into our lives by aligning energetically with what it is we want to have in our lives. It also supported by many real-life examples, which makes it a book full of lessons and worth-to-read stories.

5. The Café at the Edge of the World, John Strelecky

The Café at the Edge of the World I would consider to be a very beginner-friendly book. One, actually recommendable who don’t really know what they should think about spirituality or how to first get into the topic.

It’s a really simple but profound story about a guy who ends up at a little café far away from his actual destination. He encounters people in that café who ask him questions that seem so easy, yet are so hard for him to answer. But it’s in those answers that he makes some truly philosophical conclusions about life. Some conclusions most of us haven’t had yet, which is why it’s a perfect book to read when you first want to get into the topic of spirituality.

6. The Other Side and Back / Life on the Other Side, Sylvia Browne

This is not the case with some of psychic’s Sylvia Browne’s books. She writes about many many aspects of spirituality that are much harder to grasp. She writes especially about what comes after we face death (just as does Michael Newton in Journey of Souls, by the way).

In the Other Side books you can read about why we choose hardship for ourselves, how we are guided by our spirit guides, what comes when we go through the tunnel after we die, and so many more things. If you want to dig deeper, these are books I would recommend then. Mind you she has written a bunch!

7. Sex with the Universe (Sex mit dem Universum), Laura Malina Seiler

This little book, I fear I have only found in German so far. If you do speak German, I definitely recommend this one. It’s so short, I think I read it in a couple of hours. It’s a fictive story about a little angel who, before he can become someone’s guardian angel (or spirit guide if you will) needs to attend one more lecture, held by God.

God shares so many wisdoms with the students, things they need to know about us humans if they want to be able to assist us throughout our happy and sad moments on this earth. It’s about our biggest challenges and fears we need to overcome and what we need to understand to be able to do so. (And why we would live our best lives if we treated it like the pleasurable act of sex).

8. Ethics for a New Millennium, the Dalai Lama

This is one of the many books the Dalai Lama has written over the course of his life. It’s a deeply touching non-fiction story about human suffering and happiness, about karma, cruelty and peace. He writes about what we could do to make this earth a nicer place to live on.

He writes about what we are missing as people that turn this world into one torn by war and hunger and cruelty and difficulty. It’s about what we could do to reverse this and how we would finally find happiness in the process, something we have long forgotten how to be.

9. The Mountain is you, Brianna Wiest

It’s been a while since I read this book but I remember that it was a good one! It’s not one of the typical books about spirituality. Yet, it’s a book that talks about our emotional well-being which is something I consider to be a big part of our human lives, which, of course, determine what we learn on a spiritual level.

Brianna Wiest writes about how we make ourselves unhappy through things we learned in the past and how we can unlearn those hurtful stories we keep telling ourselves. When reading this book, it’s a bit like talking to a therapist. It’s definitely a gentle book that makes you feel really good while reading. One of my favorites for sure!

10. A little Life, Hanya Yanagihara

Lastly, A little Life is the book I’m reading currently. I was a bit skeptical at first, because it’s a large one and it has received a lot of international attention. And I was curious for sure. And even though this book doesn’t primarily have to do anything with spirituality (one character even mentions that he doesn’t believe in a higher power) I still consider it a perfect example of what I think spirituality in its core is truly about!

Especially the protagonist has an unimaginable hard life, full of pain and sorrows. If you are already a bit into spirituality, you will recognize how this must be an old soul, as the life he has chosen for himself will make him grow much much more than the average person. And you think how could someone endure so much pain but if you look at the story from a spiritual point of view, you will read it differently and you will understand better what the point of coming to this earth to live our little lives is truly about. In my opinion.

Let me know if 1. you know any of these and if you have read any, 2. if you have more books about spirituality you think everyone must read and 3. what you thought about them and how they made you feel.

I’m always very interested to learn more and am very curious about what you too can share 🙂

Love, Valentina <3

P.S. You may visit my book shop where I listed many many more books I have read over the years and shared what I thought about each of them!
