What to do when you don’t know if you’re on the right path

Step by step, the right path will present itself to you, as long as you’re able to hear your inner voice. Photo: Pexels

I feel like not knowing if we’re following the right path in life, is something that’s something so many of us are struggling with in today’s day and age. We have so many options, so many things are not really authentic, there are so many ways to fail, and fears make us scared of the future.

Why comparison is a waste of time

It’s easy to see someone online who has their own house, a terrific job, already a family, their own company and are traveling the world. We think that because we are not yet where they are, that we are behind in life. That we need to take certain steps in order to end up where they ended up.

As soon as we don’t have a job that makes a ton of money, are single, still live with our parents, started something we don’t really want to finish, lost an opportunity, or failed at something, we feel like we’re behind, like we’re making a mistake, are taking the wrong path. It’s painful and uncomfortable.

Here are a few things I realized.

Day by day, not all at once

I heard someone say that figuring out what you’re supposed to be doing for the rest of your life, is like thinking about what you want to eat for the rest of your life. This is something that you can’t know. You figure it out day by day. And that’s exactly how it works in life too.

When something feels good, right or makes you curious and excited, you keep going. If something feels wrong, you plan how to get out, stop, or find an alternative. And that’s what you do day by day, you never stop listening to your body, your gut, your heart. That’s what it means to follow a path.

You can always turn around and start over

And if someday you feel like you’re going in the wrong direction, you turn around, you go back and try to find a new route. This has nothing to do with being behind, or wasting time, which is my next point.

We are all on our own timeline. There is no right or wrong. There is no to-do list in life. There is nothing you have to have to be happy, no matter what society, or your parents, or even you think.

It takes some of us longer to figure things out, but that doesn’t mean we did anything wrong. A lot of what we do is preparation. So many times, we wouldn’t appreciate what we receive if we haven’t lived a different reality before that. So many opportunities or people wouldn’t have found us, if we hadn’t spend time doing the ‘wrong’ thing.

Much of what we experience is just preparation

Because oftentimes, the wrong thing leads us to the right thing. Which already makes it not wrong, only uncomfortable. But such discomforts are necessary in life so we find out where our paths are. We cannot know what we like if we don’t know what we don’t like either.

Failure, pain, discomfort, mistakes, all of these ‘bad’ feelings are actually our biggest indicators and sign posts. Nothing will guide us more than knowing what we don’t want, than doing the wrong thing. And remember, rejection is redirection.

You can’t fail in life. Because every thing that happens to you, shapes you. So, if you took a few steps in the wrong direction, that’s no bad thing at all. All of what you went through in life had a meaning for you, and only you. Nobody lives the same life. So I call it unnecessary to compare our lives to others…

Concluding…

  • There is no right path or right way of living, we all have different lives, no need to compare
  • Rejection is redirection
  • Failure, pain, discomfort are excellent road signs, and guide us where we want to go
  • You can’t fail in life
  • Much of what we experience is just preparation for the life we want and need
  • You figure your life out day by day, not all at once
  • Always listen to your intuition and follow your gut to find the right path

Let me know if you agree.

Love, Valentina <3
