In this blog I want to share a few things that I learnt from Dr. Joe Dispenza’s in my opinion mind-altering book “Becoming Supernatural”. He combines spirituality with (quantum)physics and makes sense of the universe and explains how it works. And the first and most important thing I learnt is that everything is either matter or energy. Matter is everything we can perceive with our senses. The rest – and far bigger part – is energy. And if we learn to step out of our perception of the ‘matter-life’ and instead learn to work with energy, we can experience life in way we have never thought possible.
Why we live in the Past
Most people live in the past for their entire life because of the routines they create. Most days, we get up, do the same things in the same order at the same time. We shower, brush our teeth, get dressed, drink coffee, take the same way to work, do the same tasks, come home, eat the things we usually eat, watch tv, read, and go to bed – for example. If we look at a random day, it doesn’t matter if it was Tuesday or Thursday – we spent the day the same way anyway. And without realizing, years go by, we get older and eventually understand that we wasted so much of our potential. The reason this happens, is because we only allow our minds to do the same things every day. This is where the importance of the mind comes in.
Why certain Things never happen to us
We might expect extraordinary things to happen in the future. But we can only ever do what our mind tells us to do. If we take a shower, it’s because our mind told us to. If we drink a cup of coffee we only do so because our mind reminded us that we want one. We don’t just randomly go bungee jumping because our mind doesn’t order us to do that. Everything can only happen if we create a thought, a desire for it first. Whatever we want to attract into our lives, we first have to accept in our head. Whether it’s a person, an object, an experience, a job, etc. If we think there is no room for it in our life, we won’t ever be able to welcome it into our life either. If we don’t have the desire for something we will never go after it.
Why other Things always do happen
We can apply this to the contrary as well. An example: I love to dance. Whenever I dance, I feel happy, fulfilled, joyful and forget everything that would bother me normally – because I have not given the corresponding thought any space in my mind. If I don’t think about anything that makes me sad, I couldn’t be sad. If I consciously choose not to let something upset me, it will never be able to make me upset. And that is a superpower. The next time you have a situation that would make you feel a way you don’t like to feel – angry, sad, upset, jealous, stressed, etc. – replace that thought with a different one. Only allow thoughts into your head that will put you in a good mood. You cannot have an emotion if you don’t have a thought triggering this emotion. Emotions are a reflection and a consequence of our thoughts!
Allowing new Things into our lives
If we don’t put aside a time or a situation where we could attract something that we could want in our life, it can’t come to us. Dr. Joe Dispenza said that he had never been disappointed by the unknown! We have to set aside a time in our day where we would do something that we don’t plan beforehand. Only then the things we don’t expect to happen can come to us. Because if we only ever do what we anticipate we can only expect results that are familiar to us. If, however, something happened that we don’t want to happen – let’s say we lost a job or had a break-up with a person – this only means that we finally have some time and space to let new things come to us. Namely a job that’s better fit for us or a person that could love us much more.
Emotions dictate our Life
In his book, Dispenza also explains the importance of our emotions. We all have times in our life where we feel better and times where we feel worse. The reason for this is because we trained our mind over years and decades to only ever think the same thoughts. And our emotions are the reactions to those thoughts. After a while, we get addicted to the emotions we have the most often because that’s the hormones our brain produces over and over again and thinks it “needs” because they are familiar. It is very easy for us to find something that’s wrong with us because we have told us these things often. Thinking those thoughts has become a habit. We do this because it’s familiar and because our brain craves the emotional response. Even if feeling sad, upset, angry, stressed, numb etc. makes us feel bad.
Taking control of our Lives
The key to changing how we feel – generally and in every moment – is to redirect our thoughts to ones that are unfamiliar to us because our brain will react differently to them. It makes sense, right? We think a though we have often, we get an emotional reaction, our brain produces the corresponding hormone and we “like” it because we are addicted to what we know. But this cycle keeps us feeling sad over a long period of time. Whenever we catch ourselves doing this in the future, we will have to redirect our focus, think of something else, provoke a different emotional reaction, make our brain make us feel something else and over time release our bond to the known synapses between thought and emotion. Practice thinking how you want to feel!
