A question that lies at the core of spirituality – and one that has also led my spiritual journey – is; who are we inside? Can we feel our souls? Why do we crave spiritual connection and enlightenment? What can we do to get to know who we are on a spiritual level, not just a physical, human one? Can we ever access that part of us that we call our soul, our higher self, our higher state of being? How can we get to know our soul?
What are we?
The first mistake I think people make when wondering what a soul is or who they are on a spiritual level is distinguishing between different parts. Sure, we look differently at our minds, our emotions, our gut, our inner world, our energy levels, our physical body. But we can never appear as just one thing. A dead body cannot live. A mind itself cannot act. A heart alone can not experience. And a soul can’t be present enough on earth to live a rich and meaningful human life. We need all of it; the heart, the mind, the body and the soul, to appear as a guest on this earth and live this life.
Don’t think of yourself as only one thing. You’re not just a body. You’re so much more than that. Live is never only what we can perceive with our eyes. We have no organ that detects energy levels, yet still we have a gut feeling that guides us in certain situations. We might have flashbacks of situations we’ve never been in, we might feel drawn to certain people and repelled by others. A certain place on earth might feel immediately like home, even though we’ve never been there before.
There is so much we can’t explain that we still perceive. Because we are not just one thing. We are a divine mixture of endless possibilities.
Why do we crave spiritual connections?
In the universe, we appear as energy. It is only on earth that we get put into a body. But our spiritual receptors go beyond those borders. Never do we loose that connection we have to other energy. Might that be nature, other people, places, animals, spirit guides, etc. Why do people turn to others for comfort? How come we consume literature, art, music? Why do people meditate, or have sex? We feel a constant craving for connection. A connection with another human being or a higher connection than that. We seek understanding and comprehension, compassion, a feeling of shared pain and suffering, brotherhood and companionship, intimacy. We want to know that we are not alone. That others have felt the same things that we are feeling right now.
We want to make sense of life. We turn to religion to explain why difficult situations happen to us. And we look for answers and relief of pain. A soul never goes alone. Energy is flowing, it is limitless, in space and time, and in opportunities too. People don’t belief in manifestation but they don’t understand why certain things happen to them over and over again. They might not understand the power of attraction, yet they attract constantly.
You are what you do
In my opinion, you are never firm, never finished, never completed. We are our experiences, our opinions, our cried tears, our laughed laughs, our endured pains. When we suffer the most, we feel closest to the universe, the place we call our home. We are constantly shaped by life – by lives. Essentially, we are a sum of all people we ever met, of all feelings we ever felt, all places we ever saw, of everything that touched our hearts – or made it bitter. We learn ways of protecting our hearts from pain, not knowing that that’s where we evolve the most.
We close ourselves off to love, accepting that we might miss out on great joy. And we take the people around us for granted, not knowing that they are part of us. You are what you do, where you go, what you see, who you kiss, what you turn away from, what you read, the calling of your heart, that gut feeling, that decision you take.
Spiritual access
How to get to know your soul? Well, live your life. Understand what you’re like. Our human bodies are too limited as for us to be able to wake up one morning and feel the soul inside of us. You can’t touch it like an arm, you can’t wipe it like a tear, hear it like a laugh, feel it like an ache. The soul is the divine essence of who you are as a spiritual being. Your soul might wander. It knows where you’ve been, what you’ve done. But it doesn’t always tell you. We need to be free to live our lives without having to carry the weight of knowledge. The universe is too big for us to understand it all. Right now, you must only exist.
How to get to know your soul?
Really, there is nothing you can do to get to know your soul. You get up in the morning, you leave the house, make that decision, get that thing done, go to that place, talk to that person and you’ll live. And the years will pass and time will mold you. You will turn into a person with a wise mind, a full heart and a tired body. You will have loved and lost, laughed and cried, been hopeful and desperate. And you will have stories to tell, wisdoms to share, advice to give.
You are who you are. And you will never stop changing. At the end, this life is not about finding what you’re looking for. The fun lies in the search, in the hunt of the experience. Live a full life. And don’t look back. And someday you’ll sit down and you’ll feel complete.
Or you might not. But that’s okay too.
Love, Valentina
